Frogger

I try and be a good urbanite. I frequent local businesses, am signed up for this local farming cooperative thing where I get really expensive organic vegetables from the Co-Op, and even walk to work. For this, I may be killed any day.

Does anyone else recall that pedestrians have right of way? No one in downtown Sacramento seems to know that. How may I tally the times that I’ve been nearly run down on my way work. The most infuriating moments are those when, poised to enter the crosswalk, I am usurped be an accelerating Lexus SUV… even though they charge by me only to reach a red light.

I have mastered the indignant glare of disapproval, which i heap on offending drivers without hesitation — though they show no remorse. On particularly close calls — I’m thinking a beige Volvo Sedan on a rainy day early this year, you motherfucker — I will even phone the authorities to report the wreckless disregard of pedestrian life, yet my complaints fall on deaf ears.

To what shall i resort? Tacks, nails or booby traps in the thoroughfare? No probably just random grumblings on this blog. But please, folks, watch out for your friend and neighbor in the crosswalk.

It’s definitely dangerous to cross the street in midtown…don’t try it during lunch, because you’ll get the in-a-hurry SUVs on you. And even though I’m a female and, in my own opinion, a good driver….heaven help us if there’s a younger-female-on-the-cell-phone driver about to make you into road pizza. They don’t even look. It’s enough to make one pray for Darwin and the extinction of this type of mammal.

I remember some years ago a story about a crackdown on jay-walking near the Capitol. I believe the police cited former Speaker Hertzberg on his way to lunch one day.

No, he wasn’t jaywalking. He was jayhugging – which is California Penal Code Section 13598098.2: the excessive hugging of another within 30 feet of a government office. You should memorize those elements for the exam.

Oh man! I thought we only had to know about common law hugging?
