Thanks!!!

Just wanted to give a shoutout to a kind stranger who helped me out at the gym today…I sat there on an tricpes machine (the same one used by the Governator) and this guy walked over and asked me if I was doing it that way “on purpose.” I had to laugh and say yes, but asked how I was doing it wrong…he showed me the correct way and we both went on with our workouts…I have always depended on the kindness of strangers!

This Little Piggy Had . . .Way Too Much

Kids, let this be a lesson to you: know when to say when.

The heat is on

Where do the gangsters go when the police come in? Do they shift elsewhere, or do they suddenly stop? My suspicion is that the hard-core just move on to another part of town, or to an entirely different town in general. If we start seeing the murder rate go up in West Sac or Stockton or, gasp, Davis….we know where they went.

library-books
When’s the last time you visited your local library? If it was when you were six years old, then you’re sadly missing out on all the cool upgrades going on at the book bank. First, let me point out that you can reserve books from the comfort of your home PC (or work, if the boss is relaxed). All you need is your library card. They’ll even send you an e-mail when the book is ready. You can browse, select the library to which you’d like the book to be sent and, voila! Pick up the book on YOUR schedule. Oh yes, it’s all free–unless you can’t return your books on time… Happy reading!

I’d also like to thank our neighbors over at The Sac Rag for pointing out that you can now check out e-versions of many of the latest books. Check out the new digital collection.

If you’re not a reader, you might be surprised that the library has many of the latest DVDs, audio books, and more. But then, if you’re not a reader, you’re probably not reading this either. Sigh.

Downtown Makeover

Is it an extreme makeover? As a former downtown resident, having another Target and a new grocery store at the Downtown Plaza are only pluses for the area. Not only that, but folks will be able to walk from the downtown offices to pick something up to bring home, or whatever. I think it’s a great idea, BUT I question why the city needs to subsidize the project. Granted, it’s not nearly as much as the proposed arena, but it’s still money that I’m not sure Sacramento can dig up. Then again, the parking rates at the plaza could go up. I suppose that could be a solution. In any case, a full service grocery is a good idea. Since I still come in from the pseudo ‘burbs to shop at the Plaza, it would be great to ’streamline’ my driving into one trip fits all.

WOO HOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The air conditioning is back up and running at the gym…I am back in business!!! Now I’ll have to think of other excuses to avoid the gym!

Watermelons!

Summer is great for seasonal fruits, and this summer, I’ve been eating a lot of delicious watermelon. It’s tasty, and cool and refreshing. 120_2076.JPGAccording to the National Watermelon Promotion Board, it’s easy to choose a good one at the store:

It’s as easy as 1, 2, 3.
1. Look the watermelon over.
You are looking for a firm, symmetrical watermelon that is free from bruises, cuts or dents.
2. Lift it up.
The watermelon should be heavy for it’s size. Watermelon is 92% water, most of the weight is water.
3. Turn it over.
The underside of the watermelon should have a creamy yellow spot from where it sat on the ground and
ripened in the sun.

Killing record

Our murder rate is up. In fact, we may reach and surpass the city’s record of 85 in 1993. I read with interest the SacBee article on the emergency city council meeting held last night. One quote in particular screamed out at me.

These crimes are not random acts, they are not indicative of a pattern of violence against hardworking, law-abiding citizens. –Police Chief Albert Najera

Well. Does this mean that every victim in the list of 45 victims this year was not hard-working or law-abiding? If I were a victim’s grieving relative I would be outraged. That kind of generalization is outrageous in and of itself, not to mention the cluster of murders that happened just last week in the Meadowview area.

Proposed pet ordinance misses the mark.

The Sac County Board of Superheroes is scheduled to discuss at 3:00PM today an idea that seeks to decrease the number of strays put to death (it’s not sleep, it’s death) at the County’s shelter each year. For frame of reference, the County killed more than half of the 17,000 cats and dogs that they “impounded” last year alone.

The County wants to do two things:

1. Increase the registration fee for pets who are NOT spayed or neutered.
2. Require veterinarians to disclose the names of folks to who come in and get their pet vaccinated.

I commend the County for putting animal welfare even somewhere on its agenda. However . . .

Yikes!

Thoughts and sympathies going out to the a 16-year-old girl and her family, as well as Sac RT bus driver Yon Gomez. According to the Bee, Gomez had a “medical event” just before his bust hit the unidentified girl.

I’ve been taking the bus to the work the last few days, which has been surprisingly convenient. A few years ago, RT had to cut back on bus service because a dearth of drivers and increased overtime costs as a result. My bus the last couple of days has been on time (or even a little bit ahead of schedule), much unlike my junior high school days when I sometimes had to wait 45 minutes for a late bus.

And on a happier note, my bus driver this morning (on the #6 route) took a moment to announce that effective Wednesday there would be a new driver on the route. This driver (who’s name I didn’t get) was “turning in the steering wheel for a bowling ball.” He announced his retirement to a roaring applause on the bus and shouts of congratulations. Good Luck and may the turkeys be plentiful.

11:02 pm Update: KCRA just reported that the man who took control of the bus when Gomez took ill was legally blind!!! Hooray for him for surely preventing other potential harm.
