Bumper Sticker / State of Confusion
Yesterday while driving through midtown to SCC for a Friday night class, I noticed the following odd bumper sticker on a Scion (those funny boxy cars):
“I love my country…
…but I think we should start seeing other people.”
Am I the only one in the dark on this–does it make sense to you? If so please comment.
As I was reading the sticker and driving, I was also listening to The Eagles‘ “Hotel California”–you know the line “You can check out any time you like, but you can never leave”…
How many people emigrate OUT of the U.S.? I suspect we may check out (like the guys in the PS3 lines this week) but most of us won’t leave. Where else would you rather live?

Italy? Things seem okay over there . . . .
Not sure I’d *rather* live there, but I wouldn’t mind.
While it’s true that our country is still preferable to many others, for many people, as it turns out, it isn’t the *only* bearable place on earth. There are some lovely alternatives out there.
The bumper sticker reads a bit clumsy, to be sure, but the message that I take from it - that we’d all be better off seeing and understanding a bit more of the world than our own country - rings true for me.
I think it’s very difficult to really know America and what it means to be American until you travel and see places that aren’t America and people that aren’t American.
Well, your interpretation makes sense. I was thinking it might refer to immigration? But then, that’s on my mind lately.
Could be - that also works. As in “See other people here in our country that we love?”
Immigration is always on my mind . . . .
I immigrated here from another country and I have to admit the US is still the land of milk and honey compared to the country where I used to live but if I had to choose, I’d wanna live in Santorini!!!
It’s true that once you get a taste of a country besides the US, it opens your eyes to a lot of things.
