No Room for Dessert

This might be blasphemous, but I officially HATE Rick’s Dessert Diner…I have given it enough chances (two to be exact), and felt it was lackluster at best, and at worst a business that preys on kitsch without providing quality. The first time I went I had part of a cream cheese brownie (they were out of regular brownies) and it was OK…but that’s all. No cake that any of my friends ordered made me want to have a second or third bite. I went there again on Friday night and it was even worse! We ordered the Mocha Torte and a Vanilla Cake/Chocolate frosting combo…YUCK YUCK YUCK!!!! Both pieces of overpriced, oversized cake were DRY DRY DRY and had no taste whatsoever. You couldn’t even tell they were different flavors. The overprocessed frosting tasted like a glob of butter with no flavor at all. It kills me since there are so many great restaurants that have AMAZING dessert, but people will flock to this place for no good reason. I am done and will not be going back!

I’ve never been to Rick’s but have often wondered if it was worth it. Now I’m wondering if you’ll post some of the good places…the holidays are rapidly approaching…would love to find a good piece of cake and good coffee.

I really like the chocolate cake at Hamburger Mary’s…YUM!!! Also, if you’re looking for soemthing different, Gaesorn, my fave Thai place, has an AMAZING banana fritter and coconut ice cream dish!!!

You’re right - and I so want it to be good, but it just isn’t up to snuff. There’s nothing more disappointing than a cake that looks promising and comes up short.

Have you tried Sweeties on J Street? Same concept, (all desserts, all the time), but much smaller space (and offerings). Still very much worth the trip because they have some very good desserts. It’s right next door to Opa! Opa!, and I believe under the same ownership.

Each time I go in there, I hope for the best and come up empty!!! I’ll try Sweeties…thanks for the tip…I also like almost everything at Freeport and Sellend’s…FAR superior desserts, but I don’t think either one has extended hours like Rick’s.

I’m a self-proclaimed cake whore, and Rick’s Dessert Diner is absolutely disgusting, so kudos to you for “coming out” on this very important issue: where to find fabulous cake. While I’m not a fan of Selland’s desserts (sorry, Bruno), I adore Freeport Bakery and New Roma Bakery (on E/18th) but, you’re right again, as traditional bakeries they close early. For evening cake snacking, I enjoy the “ho-ho” at Mulvaney’s Bldg and Loan (it should be illegal for a dessert to taste that incredible); for the later evening hours, the desserts at Tapa the World are surprisingly tasty (their decadent chocolate dessert is very rich, be warned) and you can order the desserts from Tapa the World at its neighbor/sister establishment, Kasbah (which stays open quite late).
