Midtown’s underground movie theater
If you thought your options for independent films, documentaries and other cinematic wonders ended at the Crest and the Tower, think again. A local film group is sponsoring weekly screenings of films you can’t see anywhere else in town for the low-low price of $5! Each Friday night, at 19th & K (quite literally underground–they’re in the basement), you can see excellent films that otherwise wouldn’t make there way to Sacramento. A schedule and more information can be found here.
Another little known midtown entertainment space is The Space at 2509 R St. Beyond the Proscenium is doing a great movement-based show called MedEia.
MedEia plays Thursday, Fridays and Saturdays at 8 pm to February 3, 2006, at The Space, 2509 R St., Sacramento. Two Sunday matinees are scheduled for Jan 28th and Feb 4th at 2 pm. Tickets are $15 general and $12 for seniors, students, SARTA & TBA members. Reserve your tickets now by calling 916-456-1600 or by emailing beyondpro@sbcglobal.net.
Here’s what SNR said about the show:
Sacramento News & Review – “Sacramento’s plucky, delightfully unpredictable Beyond the Proscenium Productions–which also sent a show to the Fringe a few years back–is staging something called MedEia at the Space. It’s a “modern multimedia” piece, with video, voiceovers and an unconventional structure. Voices speak from the stage, the back of the hall, even the attic. Most characters wear black outfits, and sometimes loops of knotted rope symbolizing captivity and domination.
MedEia is also physical theater. Director Nick Avdienko uses stylized, highly flexible body movement, suggesting modern dance or tai chi… Avdienko also composed this production’s music. Much of it is good, varying from George Winston-esque piano meditations to punchy, cartoonish rock riffs.
