Food, Libations, Parking

I’ve posted about the shows Capitol Garage hosts on Wednesday nights (you should really come), but I’ve yet to comment on Capitol Garage itself.
In a word: tasty.
Capitol Garage - having long anchored the busy 15th and L intersection - moved a block down to 15th and K not so long ago to make way for The Park complex at its former home. I can’t speak to the old Capitol Garage - despite years of opportunity, I never made it there. But this new incarnation - in swank corner digs - hits all the right notes from the food to the ambiance. It is a comfortable neighborhood joint with a full menu, nicely appointed bar, and friendly staff. Despite the newly constructed home, the venue maintains a sense of older streets with walls decorated in a street-art style, and thematically appropriate vehicular decorations.
But where they really shine is their menu
As a self-appointed local sandwich expert, I would give Capitol Garage high marks and rank them among the best in town when it comes to their offerings. The menu provides everything a hungry Sacramentan could need: taste, quality ingredients, low cost, and most importantly, high value. Try their BLT - a standard sandwich that is surprisingly easy to screw up but is presented perfectly on a roll with fresh, fully green lettuce, fully red tomatoes, and fully cooked bacon. No soggy pork here. A pile of red onions and optional avocado take this dish to the next level. It comes with fries that are - admittedly - hit or miss, but you won’t mind.
For those more interested in a snack - the appetizer focaccia pizza matches anything you’d expect at a swankier place - with freshly shaved cheese and perfectly balanced herbs.
Oh - and did I mention the full bar? Whatever you want - there it is. I can attest to the particularly patient bar staff who have worked tirelessly to provide me with my weekly shandy fix during the Improv shows - despite the mountains of so-far unavoidable foam that comes when you mix Sprite and Stella (try it before you comment).
Having reviewed their breakfast menu, I think I’ll soon add the Capitol Garage to the Sunday Brunch rotation. They had me at “champagne.”

The brunch is amazing…just like any other time you go there, the food rivals the booze. The Monte Cristo is the way to go, but I’m certain it exceeds anyone’s daily caloric intake.
I LOVE Monte Cristos. Probably too much. I missed that on the menu. Not sure I’m glad I know it’s there now. Doh!
