Pizza to spice up a rainy night

The weather forecast certainly had me bummed until I remembered how wonderful a nice hot pizza from Zelda’s can be. If you haven’t experienced it yet, you have to go at least once. Sooner or later, it’ll come up in conversation. Trust me.

If you’ve ever been to Chicago and had the authentic stuff, that should give you a clue what to expect. Before you go, there are a few things everyone should be aware of:

1. This place is about the food, not the atmosphere or the service (it doesn’t come with a smile), so it’s unlikely the Bee or Sacramento Magazine will ever do a big story on them

2. This is not diet food–no whole wheat or thin crusts

3. Good food can’t be rushed, so be prepared to wait quite a while if you don’t call ahead (they recommend 30-45 minutes at least)–and don’t dare try to speed it up

4. Leave your attitude at home because there is definitely no valet–in fact parking is all on the street, so be prepared to walk a few blocks

Do yourself a favor and get a deep dish pizza before comfort food season passes.

Food, Libations, Parking

I’ve posted about the shows Capitol Garage hosts on Wednesday nights (you should really come), but I’ve yet to comment on Capitol Garage itself.

In a word: tasty.

Capitol Garage - having long anchored the busy 15th and L intersection - moved a block down to 15th and K not so long ago to make way for The Park complex at its former home. I can’t speak to the old Capitol Garage - despite years of opportunity, I never made it there. But this new incarnation - in swank corner digs - hits all the right notes from the food to the ambiance. It is a comfortable neighborhood joint with a full menu, nicely appointed bar, and friendly staff. Despite the newly constructed home, the venue maintains a sense of older streets with walls decorated in a street-art style, and thematically appropriate vehicular decorations.

But where they really shine is their menu

Pittsburgh, Metroblogging City No. 52

A portal to Pittsburgh is now open! Welcome to Metroblogging, city number 52! Check them out–they have a lot to say!

Bistro 33[d Street Bistro]

It’s like one of those “Wheel of Fortune” puzzles, isn’t it.

Personally, I’ll take the full 33d Street Bistro menu over the abridged/re-imagined Bistro 33 menu anyday, though the new, hip downtown location has its perks as well. But before I even get into the merits of food or drinks at either location, I think we need to have a bigger discussion about Sacramento restaurants. All 3 of them.

Don’t forget the freebie

If you’re reading this, you might just want to pick yourself up and go and check out a museum, since they’re free from 10 AM to 4 PM. You might just be inspired!

Best Bread Ever!

It seems like it’s going to be a chilly weekend…do yourself a favor and head over to Lee’s Sandwiches (two locations in Sacramento-one on Florin, one of Power Inn), pick up some of the best French Bread in the entore world, make some soup, and RELAX!

It really is that good. I think it’s pretty cheapt too-about a dollar per baguette!

Careful: Speaking Spanish could kill you?

Stories like the one from the Bee, last updated on Wednesday January 31, disturb me. First of all, this story started out with a negative stereotype:

“Alejandro Villalobos wasn’t killed over a drug deal or for flashing a gang sign, according to his family. He wasn’t killed for wearing the wrong colored shirt on the wrong block, they said, nor for disrespecting somebody’s girl.”

Okay, well, it drew my attention. I mean, a person with a Mexican last name was shot and killed and there was no gang involved? Note sarcasm in my tone. Is that a parallel to DWB = Driving While Black …KWM = Killed While Mexican…KWM = gang death?

The guy was 23 and somebody’s father. Wrong place, wrong time–someone said something in Spanish. But what? They said they were Mexicans? What’s wrong with being a Mexican? California was once “Mexican”–it was not always American territory. Read your history books.

Heck, I speak Spanish every day. I live in Sacramento, in California. I was born in San Francisco. My kids like burritos. Does that give someone a licencia to kill? I don’t think so. There’s got to be more to the story, but all I hear is silencio.

Dry as a bone: your local levees

It’s official–the “winter crisis that never was”–no rain, no flooding. No levee breach.

Don’t throw away your flood plans, however. Keep the boat, keep the supplies on hand. Yes, you CAN buy “emergency” food supplies at your local Costco. Pretty soon everyone will be living like the Mormons do and preparing for the famine. Keep your duct tape handy and your battery powered radio fresh. Just because Tom Brokaw isn’t talking about it doesn’t mean it doesn’t exist.

Too bad so many levees are still in disrepair. Perhaps we can get them done before next winter. I don’t think anyone in Pocket wants to see a real-time enactment of the NOLA fiasco. And they STILL haven’t cleaned NOLA up, as high profile as it is. How long do you think it would take to clean up Sacramento?

Fix the skin you’re in: J Street Skin Clinic

This week I took someone to the Laser & Skin Surgery Center of Northern California located in East Sac on J Street. We were able to get in quickly because of a cancellation.

The reception staff is professional and the doctor we saw was very nice, very efficient. The clinic itself was fashionably “hip”, although I admit that the closest I personally get to hip is when I measure mine. I DO know that Britney Spears probably needs rehab or therapy, so I’m not that out of touch (By the way, has anyone seen baby #2? Why haven’t the tabloids done a ‘where’s baby2?’ cover yet?)

Back to our morning at the clinic, though… They do take insurance, and if you’re female, you’ll be happy to know that the entire medical staff appears to be female, from doctor to clerk. They are also very hush hush about patients–which is good, because you probably wouldn’t want your coworker to know you just went in for botox or collagen on your lunch break.

I’m BACK!!!!

…and better than ever. I have been travelling for the last six weekends in a row and have not had much Sactown time, and not much to write about. I don’t think one would find it too entertaining to hear about watching television on my couch (BUT you might be interested in going to Comcast and getting a DVR and changing your lives altogether)…

In Natomasville, there’s been some new restaurants opened…Qdoba Grille, Johnny Rockets, and some other chain-type places…all the travelling businessmen who come through Natomas will feel so welcome!

That’s about it for now…getting ready to finally spend some time in my place this weekend…NICE!!!
