Can you feel it in the air?

It’s that edgy, itchy “Spring has Sprung” feeling. People are out and about, the flowers have popped open, and things can get a little, well, wild.

Take the big news of yesterday: Dog neglecter Ron Artest arrested for domestic violence. Of course, you could say Mr. Artest has a long history of being a little too aggressive. A colleague read us a list of Artest’s spotty history yesterday. I hope Artest is not considered a role model for kids. Yeah, maybe he can play basketball, but he sure isn’t someone I’d want my kid to grow up to be–

Meanwhile, not far from Sac City this morning, a driver decided he just didn’t want to stop. Ran into a fence and a few parked cars (hope it wasn’t YOUR car he hit).

Must be something in the air. Don’t forget to take your Claritin. Maybe it’ll help.

Writer, Heal Thyself!

Local writers have a place to go to do just that. Check out Sutterwriters. Here’s a brief description from their website:

Sutterwriters was established in February 2002 with the mission to give patients, health professionals, caregivers (and just about anyone) a safe place to express themselves through writing.

Each session runs about 6 weeks and is quite inexpensive, with a $10 donation requested. Basically, you show up and write.

Age inequity in the baby bucks bill?

Darrell Steinberg of Sacramento has good intentions (or so I think) in proposing the baby $$ bill, but really, I don’t think it’s the way to go.

California lawmakers are considering giving $500 to every single baby born in the state. The bipartisan bill aims to give babies a financial head start with a savings account.

As a parent of a “not so newborn,” I question why newborns only, and why not any kid in CA under 18? Where do you draw the line? Sounds like propagating inequity based on the year you were born.

The bill would encourage population growth, as well as people traveling over our border just to have the baby–and I mean coming down from Oregon or motoring over from Nevada, not to mention the expectant mothers who are already braving the U.S.-Mexico border for the “gift” of U.S. citizenship. Hey, $500 is a lot of money for some folks.

Murky waters

Sacramento Fire Department was called to the gym located at Seventh and K streets at about 12:30 a.m. after 26-year-old Elida McCall of West Sacramento was found unresponsive at the bottom of a swimming pool.

Okay, I have read about these types of things happening, but usually only in my beloved mystery novels. Foul play suspected! Also,I don’t know about YOU, but I don’t think I would be wanting to go for a midnight swim at that 24 Hour Fitness any time soon. Brrr, gives me the shivers!

Must Eat: Famous Kabob

Back in college, my favorite local restaurant was Sorrento’s Persian and Italian Cuisine. Random, right? Totally random, but you can imagine the thought-process: Wow, I really want to open a restaurant that brings the food of my native country here to this sleepy college town. I don’t know if the kids will get it though. I know, let’s also just have a pot of spaghetti and marinara ready every night, just in case.

Fortunately, though, California tends to be a great part of this country for getting food from everyone else’s. In all my years here, though, I hadn’t found a good Persian place (kind of like I still haven’t found a good matzo ball soup source aside from my own stove top). Enter my roommate, herself an Iranian American with a love for home-country cooking, but with the local restaurant knowledge to back it up.

And so, last weekend, to Famous Kabob we went . . . .
