How do they compete?
How does Freeport Bakery compete with the mass market bakeries like Raley’s, Nugget, Safeway? We’ve already seen another local bakery, Philipp’s, close down, as well as the Brioche Artisan Bakery closed, for reasons unknown to this blogger.
We stopped in Freeport Bakery tonight for a look-see and the cakes were lovely but the prices…wow! Although I guess the prices are similar to the big supermarkets…with the high end cakes at Nugget ranging up into the $20s and the cakes at Freeport Bakery about $26. Now, because Nugget has 1 slice purchases available, I knew what the Carrot Cake was like before I bought the large one for a gathering. I didn’t catch whether Freeport sold by slice or not–difficult to figure out with all the chalkboard signage.
We didn’t stay long or make a purchase at Freeport, but it appears to have good ratings, and they sell coffee too. I suppose they’d have to be that much better than their larger neighbors to compete. After all, you can buy a decent but plain Lemon Cake at Raley’s for less than $5, and all three of the supermarkets I mentioned above sell fresh brewed coffee.
Guess I’ll have to go back and try the cake–if you look at their website, the wedding cakes look lovely. Too bad I’m already wed. CD and others with nuptials approaching: where are you buying your cake, anyway?

I’ve long been a Freeport fan and with options dropping daily, it seems, they are certainly in the front running. But if I MUST sample from several places, then so be it!
Try New Roma on 17th and E. Delicious AND relatively inexpensive. They even take food stamps! Freeport Bakery remains competitive because they’re in Land Park.
Give a bit of credit to the business itself… Freeport Bakery remains competitive because they’re superb.
I had a blind taste test with one of their horseshoe-shaped almond cookies. I picked it off a plate at my office in Roseville. I claimed it was the best cookie I’ve ever had, then asked my boss where she got them. She said she happened to be in the Land Park area and swung by Freeport Bakery.
Ironically, they’re moving to 19th and Broadway in a couple years - or whenever the new building is completed. I wonder if they’ll keep the name or change it to Broadway Bakery?
The news about Pilipp’s is terrible. I hope that whole family gets its act together and the bakery is able to reopen.
Phillips had the best tea-ring in my recent history. I missed the news they were closing…very sad news.
Coffee at Freeport leaves much to be desired in my opinion and their baked goods are hit and miss. I do agree the Horseshoe Almond cookies are buttery rich madness, but I had a Boston Cream Pie there (nobody else sells one that I know of) and the custard was gelatiny and didn’t taste like real vanilla. On the other hand, I’ve had a few of their other cakes that blew my mind: recently, the one with poppyseed cake and chocolate ganache and I also remember really, really getting cake-wacked by a raspberry/apricot/almond conconction last fall.
Freeport was our office pastry preference until Old Soul arrived.
yes, you can order single slices of their cakes.
freeport bakery is delicious. one of the best bakeries in town. but i’m upset at the price increase. i don’t think i’ll be going there as often anymore. :( i have a couple of friends who used to work there but then quit. apparently, they raise prices like crazy but still pay their employees minimum wage.
Freeport’s incredible. We got our wedding cake there about three years ago. We overestimated (on purpose) and ended up with about a week’s worth of extra cake. Best week ever.
Cinnamon rolls are also extraordinary.
