Everyone’s A Critic
Or just critical. Or maybe that’s just me.
Props to Ursula for catching the MSN list of top Sac restaurants. Ursula is far more diplomatic than I am. I can’t help but wonder, looking at the picks, if there wasn’t a fee involved in making the list.
The list, by the way, in tiny print, is credited to Gayot.com a site that supposedly “serves as a serious, honest and professional resource on dining and travel for an international readership in search of the best.” I called a qualified bullsh*t because the list includes Dragonfly - Sacramento’s home of overpriced, poor quality sushi, and McCormick & Schmick’s which, while tasty, is not a restaurant-reason to come to Sacramento because most people can find it at home.
The true gems of Sacramento dining - places like Mulvaney’s, Moxie, and The Kitchen, are suspiciously absent.

How about the you guys (and maybe visitors to the site) come up with your own list of top 10 restaurants in Sac. I mean why leave it to reviewers that have only visited the city a few times. I keep finding new and interesting places and I have lived here for years. You mention “Mulvaney’s, Moxie, and The Kitchen” but I have never heard of these places. Every few months, there are new places that open up. It’s a bit of a food renaissance if you think about it.
So how about it? Metroblogging Sacramento’s list of top 10?
Hmmm, since I don’t eat typically sushi, I liked Dragonfly–I had the teriyaki chicken.
I’m afraid a top 10 list by a non-sophisticated diner like myself might include such faves as In-n-Out burger. Yes, really. Chain chain chains. But I think the idea has merit. Certainly other writers on this site have the sophistication and…uh, moxie? to give it a try!
That would be “typically eat”…note word order correction. :-)
christiana - I wish that I’d considered a “pay-for-inclusion” angle with regards to that msn list…makes sense to me! And that I’d remembered Moxie and Mulvaney’s as well as The Kitchen when I left a comment on ursula’s post earlier.
alvin - wow. what a great idea!
ursula - what about more than one list? perhaps based on level of sophistication? Don’t ask me how such a level would be determined…price? percentage of menu not in English? Number of sous-chefs in the kitchen? executive decision by an appointed Arbiter of Sophisitcation?
I prefer a local treat like Todo Un Poco in Laguna. Lots of choices, the owner actually cares, and it is unique.
Good ideas all around. I’ve tossed the notion out to our intrepid, if small-in-number authors to see what kind of angle they’d like to take on this - either individual or a group list.
So you’ll see some kind of input from us soon.
I like the idea of multiple lists or maybe just multiple catagories. Stay tuned!
