Bringing it home

I was running along the Parkway today, and right where the C Street Trail joins with the path coming from the Blue Diamond Almond Plant were two guys. They had a huge length of copper wire that was all squirrely, and they were coiling. I smiled, and one of them said, “Hey, man, this is how you do it!”

Cash money, ripe for the taking.

Am I wrong in thinking they stole the copper? I’m sure their families are so proud.

And you watched your tax money go away…

(sadly I do know what I would have done in that situation either)

When you’re down on your luck, either by choice or not, you’re going to do what you need to do to survive. I’m not saying their actions are "right," but we need to cut that activity off at the source: the recycle yards that take this obviously stolen material for cash. I can’t believe copper theft has gone on this long without a recycle yard crack-down. Force the resellers to copy their driver’s license, or better yet require them to provide a valid contractor’s license.
