Got a hankering to vote? You’re in luck!
If you’re a Dem, anyway.
Though there’s much concern about the length of this year’s Presidential race, for government nerds, it’s been a great year for helping educate the rest of the non-nerding public about the real process by which we select our candidates. You may have heard something in the news about “delegates,” right? You’ve probably heard even more about “superdelegates.” This weekend, however, is about the regular delegates.
Tomorrow, in each of California’s 53 Congressional Districts, the two campaigns - Clinton and Obama - will convene caucuses to select delegates for this summer’s national convention in Denver. Given the tight race, it’s more likely than at any point so far in my lifetime that the delegates might actually be CHOOSING the nominee in Denver, rather than merely enjoying a really great, week-long party.
Delegates are apportioned to the districts based on the results of the primary vote back in February. More Democratically active districts get more delegates.
Any registered Democrat can attend and vote for delegates at his or her caucus. If you want to vote, or just check out the action, visit the California Democratic Party website to find the location for each candidate’s event.
