Great neighborhood association link

Among the comments related to our 20th-most walkable city post, commenter wburg included a handy link to a really, really long list of Sacramento neighborhood associations. It’s so handy, in fact, that it seemed worth giving a public hat-tip to wburg and giving y’all the link right up-front: http://www.cityofsacramento.org/ns/nadb/alpha.cfm.

I’ll admit I’m torn over neighborhood associations in general: nightmares of NIMBY-ism run rampant balanced against local residents coming together to beautify a park, etc.  Anyone with comments on the relative strengths or weaknesses of a particular association is invited to comment.  Are these local orgs effective? Off-putting?  Did you even know you had one in your area?

One thing that should be pointed out is that neighborhood associations aren’t like homeowner’s associations in condos and gated communities, where the HOA can actually levy fines and create rules that everyone in the neighborhood has to follow. Membership in a neighborhood association is voluntary (in an HOA, it’s mandatory) and they don’t actually have any legal authority or political power at all. They are more of a storehouse of information about who to call about problems, what’s going on in the neighborhood, and what might possibly be done about it.

I definitely think they are effective and great programs. My sister is a part of the downtown sacramento partnership and they get a lot of benefits. They help the city out a lot as well. Planting trees, hosting events, ribbon cuttings etc.

The Downtown Sacramento Partnership is a very, very different thing. That’s a "Business Improvement District," an organization with quite a bit of money and power, including a professional staff. Neighborhood associations are volunteer-run and operate with a very small budget.

Out of curiosity I was wondering if anyone could tell me which neighborhood association a person that lived at 24th and Capitol would participate in. I noticed the 20th street group on the webpage link provided in the post but was unable to determine if their was a group for my neighborhood.

24th and Capitol is part of the Winn Park Capitol Avenue neighborhood association (WPCANA.)
