Train Rides along the River

Historic locomotives, steam or diesel, run along the levees of the Sacramento River for a six-mile, 45-minute roundtrip excursion.

Weekend excursion trains run Saturdays and Sundays; April through September; every hour on the hour, 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. (weather permitting — If temperatures reach 100 degrees or higher, trains may be cancelled).

Train ride tickets are available to book online in advance. Regular Coach: $12 adults, $6 youths (ages 6-17), ages 5 and under ride free. First Class Car available on select weekends with a higher ticket price. No tickets are available for pre-purchase online the day of the train ride.

Train depart from the Central Pacific Railroad Freight Depot (On Front Street between J and K Streets).

The Explore Science: Earth & Space

The Explore Science: Earth & Space event at Powerhouse Science Center is March 18 & 19 2017 from 11:00 am to 3:00 pm.
Your family will discover the exciting fields of Earth and space science; learn about NASA science research and explore Earth and space phenomena.
Make clouds, imagine what extraterrestrial life might be like, investigate gravity, explore icy worlds, and other activities.

All activities are included with the price of the Powerhouse Science Center’s weekend admission: $8 adults (18+), $7 seniors (60+), $7 teens (13-17), $6 children (4-12), $0 children (3 and younger).

Hard Working Women of the Frontier

Sutter’s Fort presents a “Hands on History: Hard Working Women on the Frontier” event on Saturday, March 18, 2017, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Experience what life was like for pioneer women in California’s 1840s.
Pioneer women did not live lives of leisure; women set up their own businesses selling eggs, milk, or baked goods.

See Dutch oven cooking demonstrations that include the sampling of bread from a recipe that dates to the 1840s.

Demonstrations of black powder weaponry in action will take place including the firing of Sutter’s cannon at 11 a.m., 1 p.m. and 3 p.m.

Author and historian Cheryl Stapp will give presentations at 11:15 a.m. and 1:15 p.m.
