Get Your Om On
Good Yoga is hard to find. Sure, 24 Hour offers yoga classes, but they can be hit-or-miss affairs. And forget that Bikram crap - when I want to feel like passing out I’ll . . . okay, I never want to feel like passing out. Sacramento, however, seems to have a Yoga studio tucked into every 5th block in midtown - the converted bottom floors of many old Victorians or bungalows littered with sweaty bodies in shivasna-induced comas (I googled my best on that spelling, but it’s still probably wrong).
Enter Deep Art Yoga on the corner of 21st and H Streets in Midtown. The long, rectangular space hosts a full schedule of yoga classes as well as an art gallery. At Deep, inner peace meets outer beauty as you stretch and sweat under framed painting of photography.
After the jump: enthusiastic instructors, yoga in the park, oodles of free Om
My coworkers have attended the Monday evening class a few times already - today was the first day I was able to join them. It was my first class at the studio, but my second with AnneMarie.
A few weeks back, I attended Deep’s Tuesday night class at McKinley Park (to the left of the library if you’re facing the park from Alhambra - the faaar left, over by the street, under the shady trees). The class meets Tuesdays at 7pm and is a bargain $5. It was relatively small when I visited - great for beginners or regulars to cut loose and loosen up.
Tonight, however, was Power Yoga Basics for Beginners. The “Power” part references the two space heaters that make it a toasty hour - but fall short of Bikram levels of insanity. It is a well-paced practice that definitely gets all your muscles working as you move through a series of poses while focusing on breathing and balance. At times, I felt a bit over-heated, but the last few minutes of shivasna are all the sweeter when the heat goes off and the doors open. Still, I’m looking forward to trying some of their fresher air offerings.
The full class schedule is available here and the course descriptions can be found here. And don’t forget about the Art in Deep Art Yoga. Haven’t heard of Deep before but want to check it out? They offer a primo deal for first-timers - two weeks of unlimited classes for just $10. After that, regular rates are around $10 per class with multi-class passes getting you a discount.
Grab a mat, a towel, some water, and go get limber.
