Daphne’s Greek in Review
Okay, yes, it is a chain. But it’s new in Midtown, and well, it’s Greek, so we have to say something about it. Love Greek food. I’ve been twice to Daphne’s in the last month. Once before Independence Day, and once recently, like last Friday. Two slightly different impressions, both solid. Daphne’s will be on my “go to” lunch plan in the future.
Both visits: friendly staff, rousing Greek music pouring out of the overhead speakers. Quick service. I recommend if you’re going for lunch that you go a tad early–say, 11 AM. You’ll miss the big rush.
About the food: good, standard Greek fare. Daphne’s is to Greek like Panda Express is to Chinese. If you want something really exotic, don’t do Daphne’s. But what they DO have is a nice selection of dishes for “regular folk.”
My companion the first trip had the Gyro and french fry lunch. The meat was tender and lightly spicy and the fries were spiced but fresh and…addictive…oops, I snagged one too many off my companions plate and got my hand slapped.
I had the chicken kebob lunch plate. The meat was good, the tzatziki sauce tangy and fresh. Pita squares lightly baked but still warm. A LOT of rice and a nice serving of salad with feta cheese and kalamata olives were on the side. The beverage bar is serve yourself and your food is brought to your table by one of the friendly young women who work there.
My second trip there my companion had the soup and salad lunch. The soup, a lemon egg drop soup, was thck and spicy. My companion has had many a Greek soup and said it was spicier than most soups with the same name at other venues. I found it pleasant, and I was surprised as lemon and egg anything doesn’t sound particularly appealing. The salad chosen was Spicy Greek chicken salad. Filling and spicy.
Oh, I tried the steak kebob this time. Good, but if you like your meat well done make sure you ask for it cooked that way.
Prices for lunch are reasonable, even for a person who doesn’t eat out too often. Judging by the exponential increase in guests between visits, I suspect Daphne’s will be a midtown success. See you there soon!
Located in the Iron Horse Safeway parking lot at 19th and S Street in Midtown. Has a To GO menu. Casual dining (like a slightly classier Carl’s Junior)
