Theatre of Lights


The 9th Annual Theatre of Lights has been running in Old Sacramento since November 22 and will continue through Christmas Eve.

There will be a 20-minute live dramatization of “’Twas the Night Before Christmas,” on the balconies above K Street. The 150-year-old building facades light up with color.

Theatre of Lights shows continue throughout the holiday season, Thursday through Sunday nights 6:00 & 7:30pm. Beginning December 19 shows Tuesday through Sunday. One show at 6:00pm on Christmas Eve.

This Family-Friendly event is free.

Old Sacramento is located along the east bank of the Sacramento River between the Tower Bridge and I Street Bridge.

Two public parking garages are available:
Old Sacramento Garage, entrance on I Street between 3rd and 2nd.
Tower Bridge Garage, entrance on Capitol Blvd at Neasham Circle near the Tower Bridge.

Train Rides along the River


Historic locomotives, steam or diesel, run along the levees of the Sacramento River for a six-mile, 45-minute roundtrip excursion.

Weekend excursion trains run Saturdays and Sundays; April through September; every hour on the hour, 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. (weather permitting — If temperatures reach 100 degrees or higher, trains may be cancelled).

Train ride tickets are available to book online in advance. Regular Coach: $12 adults, $6 youths (ages 6-17), ages 5 and under ride free. First Class Car available on select weekends with a higher ticket price. No tickets are available for pre-purchase online the day of the train ride.

Sky Spectacular 2017

Saturday, December 31, 2016 is the New Year’s Eve Sky Spectacular a free family-friendly event from 6:00 p.m. with fireworks at 9:00 p.m.
There will be Superheroes roaming Front street. Bring your camera to take photos of your kids with their favorites.
In the Waterfront Park area there will be balloon twisting and face painting.
At 9:00 is the fireworks show with music simulcast on 106.5 FM. Only one fireworks show this year; however, it will be about 20 minutes long.

Plan ahead, the will be a great deal of traffic. Consider public transit. If driving, consider this: Old Sacramento will be closed to ALL vehicle traffic at 4:00 p.m. also the Tower Bridge will be closed beginning at 7:30 p.m. to ALL vehicle traffic and will re-open after the 9:00pm fireworks display.

Old Sacramento Tree Lighting Ceremony

oldsactree002The 58-foot tall Old Sacramento Christmas Tree will be lit Wednesday, November 23, 2016 (Thanksgiving Eve), at 6:00pm Front Street and K Street. Festivities from 5:00pm to about 8:00pm.

The lights and sound of Theatre of Lights begins after the tree lighting Wednesday, November 23, skipping Thanksgiving Day then Thursday through Sundays, at 6:15 and 7:45 from the day after Thanksgiving through Christmas Eve.
